WIN Learning K12 Solution

WIN Learning's Career Readiness System is a digital teaching and learning solution designed to prepare learners for career and college success. The system consists of career readiness courseware and assessment components that yield career readiness credentials, all of which are accessible through a single sign-on portal.

A survey of 2,000 businesses found 40% had positions open at least six months because they could not find candidates who had the required foundational and soft skills. A second survey found roughly half of all college graduates applying for open jobs did not have the necessary applied skills to be hired; and 39% of high-school graduates wanting to go directly to work were unprepared for entry-level jobs (Society for Human Resource Management, 2008).

 Challenge

Fewer learners are adequately prepared for life after high school and simply suggesting that all students go to college with developmental or remediation courses or drop out of college in debt is not working. All students should be prepared to go to college, the question is whether they are "ready" for college or need added experiences and career opportunities. The reality is that all students must be both college AND career ready. We need to provide our students with career explorations in the early grades; prepare them for academic and soft skills; and provide a pathway for their future.

To turn these circumstances around and increase students’ readiness for their next steps, we need to begin to link what goes on in the classroom with what is happening in the economy. WIN Learning has done just that with its personalized WIN Career Readiness System—a series of fully aligned web-based programs that help students understand the realities of the workplace through project-based learning, career exploration and essential soft skills courseware.

The personalized WIN Career Readiness System is based on the Educonomy Model—an intersection between education and the economy where supply, demand, and career pathways are the new drivers for education and training, people and talent, occupations and jobs, and business and industry.

In the Educonomy model, employability, foundational, and social skills are learned within the context of careers. This real-world focus helps define the personalized selection of coursework and other experiences in high school that lead to desired careers—either directly after graduation or following further training and education. All of WIN’s products and services are linked in a seamless system across the education and learning continuum—from job analysis and skill assessment, to direct instruction and certification of mastery.

If we do not increase the number of Americans with necessary skills, jobs will increasingly migrate abroad, creating even bigger challenges for our long-term competitiveness and economic growth. We must all work to prepare students for 21st Century opportunities after high school.
