Eventful Day — Teacher Guide
Directions
In this assignment students use their knowledge of ratios and proportion to plan an event.
Students are provided information about four different events. Each scenario includes the following information:
- Type of event
- Number of people attending
- Food and beverage items that will be available
- Entertainment room rental fees
Teachers are encouraged to let students plan their own events rather than using one of the scenarios. If students are allowed to plan their own events, the group work will include researching the costs. Students should prepare two packages similar to the packages provided in the sample scenarios.
Group Work
Students will work in groups to:
- select an event;
- determine the total cost of the event based on the provided price sheet;
- determine the cost of the event per person; and
- share their findings with the class.
Materials Needed
Each student will need one copy of the Exceptional Events Planning Worksheet.
Students will access scenarios for four sample events online.
Teachers should verify the accuracy of group work before students begin the individual work.
Final Report
Individually, students will:
- prepare a report explaining the cost per person for each of two price packages;
- determine the cost of the event to the organizer if a generous donor pays for a percentage of the total cost;
- determine the impact of adding a gratuity on the total cost and the cost per person;
- determine the percentage of change to the cost per person if a percentage of guests cancel at the last minute;
- calculate the cost per person if the facility fee increases; and
- determine and explain the impact of increasing the number of attendees on the cost per person.
Student should be allowed to use their Exceptional Events Planning Worksheets while completing the final report.
