Shots for Tots — Introduction

CDC Medical Officer

Medical officers are physicians who serve as advisors, consultants, and administrators. A medical officer might:

  • conduct cutting-edge medical research for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC); or
  • travel with Team USA to the Olympic Games and oversee the heath care for U.S. Olympians during the games; or
  • work for the World Health Organization (WHO) to study and prevent diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Ebola.

  Your Mission

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC) is a national agency responsible for protecting the health of the American public. The group does research, provides information to the public, and responds to health threats.

The CDC estimates that vaccinating children born between 1994 and 2013 will prevent 332 million illnesses. That’s more than the current population of the United States! Vaccinating children will likely save 732,000 lives.

Here is your chance to make a difference in the life of a child! As a medical officer of the CDC, one of your many responsibilities is making sure that clinics around the country have the supplies they need for the Vaccines for Children Program, a federal program that provides free vaccines for children. You and your team of fellow medical officers have been assigned to research the population of an urban area, calculate the approximate number of children who live in the area, and use economic data to estimate the number of children eligible to receive vaccines and other services offered by the new free clinic.

On your own, you will use information about the clinics, the population, and the vaccines to prepare a budget for the clinic. This information will help others at the CDC measure the success of the Vaccines for Children Program and help the drug companies plan production so there will be enough vaccine to meet the demand.

The health and well-being of thousands of children is in your hands. Good luck!
